We hung four new birdhouses in our garden this spring just in time for the birds’ nesting season. Now I’ve been busy preparing lodgings for insects. This bug hotel is supposed to attract beneficial insects that will pollinate my berries and fruit trees and get rid of unwanted pests in my garden.

Linnunpöntöt saatiin juuri sopivasti sijoilleen ennen kevätmuuttoa. Nyt olen valmistellut ötökkähotellia houkutellakseni hyödyllisiä hyönteisiä pihallemme. Rakensin erilaisia pesäkoloja siinä toivossa että ne vetäisivät puoleensa tehokkaita pölyttäjiä ja tuholaistensyöjiä.
Plenty of material in our garden! The main thing is that it’s dry. Different kinds of housing will be suitable for different types of insects. You’ll find a good article on the subject here for example by Robin Horton 🙂

The first bug hotel I ever came across was this one (in the picture above) in the garden of Château Guiraud in Sauternes. It houses bugs that pollinate and care for the vineyards that produce one of the most famous sweet Bordeaux wines. At Guiraud they have long recognized the advantages of insects in keeping the vineyards healthy.

Tässä yllä kuva ensimmäisestä hyönteishotellista johon törmäsin vuosi sitten Sauternesin kuuluisalla Château Guiraud:n viinitilalla Bordeaux:ssa. Siellä on jo monta vuotta edistetty viinitarhojen hyvinvointia hyönteisten avulla.
Here are my versions of the insect hotel. The smaller one I’m hoping will be housed by solitary bees, very efficient pollinators apparently.

Tässä minun kaksi versiotani ötökkähotellista valmiina vastaanottamaan kaikki kotia etsivät hyönteiset 🙂 Kannon lyhennyksestä jäi yli pöllin siivu johon porasin eri kokoisia reikiä, ja jonka asukeiksi odottelen erakkohyönteisiä kuten villimehiläisiä. Ne ovat kuulemma erittäin tehokkaita pölyttäjiä.
If you don’t know this one you’ll have to try! For decades now we have avoided the total vole destruction of our garden by planting these pretty flowers, the fritillaria. I’m certainly no gardener but these bulbs keep producing lovely blossoms every spring in very poor soil without any care at all. And the best thing about them is a vole free garden!

Myyrätuhoilta on muuten vältytty jo parikymmentä vuotta näiden kauniiden pikarililjojen ansiosta. Ne jaksavat kukkia köyhässä maassa vuodesta toiseen ilman sen kummempaa hoitoa – suosittelen! Kaunista alkukesää kaikille 🙂
