The historical silk stocking I knitted two years ago was dyed last summer by the Refashioning the Renaissance research team. I had a chance to photograph the stocking last week, so here is the last update on my huge knitting project of two years back. The fustic dye (maclura tinctoria, keltapuu in Finnish) gave a… Continue reading The golden yellow silk stocking

Replica of a historical silk stocking, historiallisen silkkisukan kopio
This is a replica of a stocking dating from around 1650, that was found in the tomb of Elisabeth Bure in the Turku Cathedral. If you've been wondering whatever happened to this project, I did finish my version of this historical silk stocking, not too long after my previous post well over a year ago.… Continue reading Replica of a historical silk stocking, historiallisen silkkisukan kopio
Two Twig and Leaf shawls, lahjahuiveja
I really like this shawl pattern that I purchased through Ravelry - the Twig and Leaf by Anne Hanson. Five years ago I made a shawl for my mother-in-law with it and now I used it to make two presents for some dear old friends. Hardly a challenge after my silk stocking project last winter!… Continue reading Two Twig and Leaf shawls, lahjahuiveja
Summer for Barbie, Barbin kesä
This summery post has been in the making for a long time. I finished Barbie's dress a couple of years ago after purchasing a set of 50's patterns but I couldn't portray her without shoes, a sun hat, a shawl... and since I'm into making underwear - Barbie needed some too. The classic 50's style… Continue reading Summer for Barbie, Barbin kesä
Silk stocking continued, silkkisukka etenee
Silkkisukkaprojekti on edennyt parhaimmillaan 20 kerroksen päivävauhtia. Kantalapun valmistuttua kerroksia on kertynyt 734, aikaa kulunut noin 220 tuntia, keskimäärin 2,5 tuntia neulomista päivässä ja vähän vajaa 18 minuuttia per kerros. Sukkaprojektini on osa Aalto-yliopiston tutkimusprojektia josta YLE:n tiedetoimittaja Anniina Wallius kirjoitti pari viikkoa sitten pitkän jutun. Se julkaistiin YLE:n nettisivuilla naistenpäivänä ja kuvitus on minun… Continue reading Silk stocking continued, silkkisukka etenee
Silk Stocking project – getting started, Silkkisukkaprojektin aloitus
I finally got to knitting the actual silk stocking for the citizen science project I'm taking part in. Our aim is to replicate stockings from 1650 found in a tomb in the Turku Cathedral. The original pair of stockings is currently on show at the Turku Castle in an exhibition called A Few Words about… Continue reading Silk Stocking project – getting started, Silkkisukkaprojektin aloitus
Comfort shawl, lohtuhuivi
I have kept busy although you might not think so considering the frequency of my posts! I have finally started knitting the historic silk stocking I mentioned in a previous post and will be telling you how that's going shortly. There are many more projects I want to share so I'll just have to find… Continue reading Comfort shawl, lohtuhuivi
Teeny-tiny knitting, Pikkuruisia neuleita
I'm taking part in a citizen science project trying to reconstruct a silk stocking from the 17th century. It's part of a larger project called Refashioning the Renaissance, studying clothing of that period in Western and Northern Europe. Our knitting team started practicing and making swatches with wool and 0,7mm needles. This is what I… Continue reading Teeny-tiny knitting, Pikkuruisia neuleita
Warm woollens for the outdoors, lämmintä päälle
More felted mittens and a pair of leg warmers to match. This time I used a much thinner yarn, Pirkka-lanka, which is an old favourite of mine. It felts wonderfully and has a really fantastic colour chart of over 80 beautiful shades. Scroll down for instructions in English. * Kokeilin huovutettujen lapasten neulomista myös ohuemmalla… Continue reading Warm woollens for the outdoors, lämmintä päälle
Felted mittens, huovutetut lapaset
We're in the middle of winter with forecasts of temperatures well below freezing as far as they'll predict. A pair of woollen felted mittens is just what's needed for this weather and I had to replace an old pair. For felting you need a 100% wool yarn, preferably loosely spun. Mine is an discontinued old… Continue reading Felted mittens, huovutetut lapaset
