This year´s gingerbread house is a miniature of a run down house in our neighbourhood. Tips for gingerbread builders at the end of the post... The theme for the yearly gingerbread competition of our biggest newspaper, Helsingin Sanomat, was "a part of Helsinki" - my home town, so I decided to enter this creation with a wish that something would be done to save the house. The newspaper did a story about it and since then we´ve heard that the owners have indeed finally come to an agreement and the house will be repaired. This must have happened well before I made my ‘statement’, so no thanks to me - but good news all the same 🙂

Piparkakkutaikina, gingerbread recipe
Still working on it but this is one window of this year´s gingerbread house (to be revealed later when it´s ready). The recipe below is for delectable little gingerbread cookies that will melt in your mouth! Don´t try making a gingerbread house out of it, you´ll need a sturdier dough for that! * Näin joulua… Continue reading Piparkakkutaikina, gingerbread recipe
Dog´s jumper, koiran villis
This is Foxy, an adorable Basenji who lives with my son and his girlfriend. She is wearing the jumper I made her to match the one I knitted for my son a few years ago. It's a modified version of a Drops pattern. * Foxy sai villapaidan joka sopii isännän samasta langasta neulottuun harmaaseen villikseen. Molemmissa… Continue reading Dog´s jumper, koiran villis
Hohtoa elämään! Glow in the dark!
I am quite obsessed about (especially) my loved ones wearing a proper reflector at this, the darkest time of the year! A pretty alternative for a reflector band is a lace one. These have been crocheted with thin reflective thread and a 1.25 mm hook, then carefully ironed between two sheets of paper to straighten… Continue reading Hohtoa elämään! Glow in the dark!
Tatted mobile pouch, kännykkäpussi käpypitsistä
This is the third lace pouch I've made for my mother's old mobile. The two previous ones were crocheted and wore out pretty quickly. I'm hoping this tatted version will resist the wear and tear a little longer. The pattern is made of two square motifs and a border of rings through which an elastic… Continue reading Tatted mobile pouch, kännykkäpussi käpypitsistä
Blueberry cheesecake, mustikkajuustokakku
I tried this cheesecake with blueberries this time since my freezer is full of them :). I´ve used the same recipe many times for a blackcurrant cheesecake which works beautifully (and looks exactly the same). With the blackcurrant version I like to serve some whipped cream, this milder blueberry one prefers a little more taste… Continue reading Blueberry cheesecake, mustikkajuustokakku
Souvenirs from France, tuliaisia Ranskasta
An overwhealming fragrance of lavender fills the room when I open my suitcase after our yearly trip to France. Throughout the year I'm reminded of our summer holidays as the lavender continues to perfume our home in small bouquets around the house and specially made lavender pouches between the linen and in wardrobes. The little… Continue reading Souvenirs from France, tuliaisia Ranskasta
Kaalilaatikko, cabbage and pearl barley casserole
- In English at the end of the post - Tällä kermaisen kaalilaatikon ohjeella tulee iso uunivuoallinen ruokaa, reilusti kahdeksalle henkilölle. Ohjeen voi helposti puolittaa, mutta myös pakastaa kiireisen… Continue reading Kaalilaatikko, cabbage and pearl barley casserole
Crocheted linen, isompia ja pienempiä virkattuja liinavaatteita
This bedspread was a big but fun project to do. It's a traditional pattern, the original of which was crocheted over a hundred years ago in western Finland. Mine is made with quite a thick cotton thread, has 72 squares and a matching border running at the foot end and sides. Tämä on suuritöisimpiä tekemiäni… Continue reading Crocheted linen, isompia ja pienempiä virkattuja liinavaatteita
Embroidered serviette rings, lautasliinarenkaat
I saw serviette rings made this way in a restaurant a couple of years ago. They were plain linen with a similar pretty button. Easy to make and personify with a simple embroidered monogram. For guests any embroidered ornament would do the trick. Idean näihin helppoihin lautasliinarenkaisiin sain eräästä ravintolasta. Yksinkertaisiin pellavakaitaleisiin lisäsin pienellä ristipistolla… Continue reading Embroidered serviette rings, lautasliinarenkaat
